A baby girl was found in the car park of North Texas pizza takeaway on Sunday night by police. However it transpired that the 6-month old baby had not been abandoned, but simply left by accident by her absent minded father.

An officer from the Northlade Police Department reportedly found the infant sitting strapped into a car seat, which was placed on the side of the car park, on Sunday evening. The authorities started trawling CCTV images of the car park outside the Domino’s Pizza takeaway in Roanake to try and determine how the baby came to be left there alone, however the mystery was quickly solved when a phone call was received by the nearby pizza store from the frantic mother of the child.

Explaining how the infant had come to be left alone in the car park, the father described how he had dropped his wife off to do some shopping, before heading to the Domino’s Pizza takeaway to collect an order. With four children to keep track of, the father accidentally forgot to load the fourth child into the car, leaving her in her seat on the side of the parking space.

When the family arrived home, they realised they were one child down, and quickly called the Domino’s Pizza store where they’d just collected their takeaway to alert staff to the fact they thought they’d left their child there.

Both parents were questioned by police who were satisfied the incident was a genuine mistake. The 6-month old baby girl has now been safely returned to her family and no further charges are being pursued by the police.

US congress are in the process of considering proposals put forward by the Agricultural Department on food classification for school children, including the classification of a pizza as a vegetable due to the tomato paste used on the base.

Congress are currently reviewing the recommendations being outlined as part of a new healthy eating incentive for school children before voting on what will become legislation. Part of this process will see senators vote on how to classify specific food products for use in school dinners with foods being categorised to help schools across the States offer balanced meals for pupils.

However the suggestion that a pizza could be classed as vegetable due to the tomato paste topping has raised eyebrows, especially in light of the Obama administration’s proposals to make school dinners healthier to help battle the increasing obesity rates amongst America’s young people.

Currently, a pizza with 2 tablespoons of tomato paste is counted as a vegetable, however this could be increased to half a cup to equal a vegetable serving according to the new proposals. The Agricultural Department are pushing for tomato puree to be treated in the same way as other fruit pastes and purees.

The Agricultural Department has been crafting the proposals for the last year. The main aim of the bill is offer more nutritional lunch options for school children, although congress and the food industry have reportedly pushed back on the details in order to keep costs down as the price of fresh vegetables could prove too costly for school budgets.

Congress is expected to vote on the proposals later this week.

A great grandmother from Newfoundland, Canada, celebrated her 106th birthday last week and credits her love of pizza with helping her reach her milestone age.

Margaret Ellen Moores turned 106 on November 5th and celebrated with a party surrounded by her family and friends. When asked about her tips for a long life, the centurion’s daughter, 65-year-old Marie Cheeseman, revealed that her mother has always had a sweet tooth and loves nothing better than tucking into pizza and fries.

For a woman who’s lived for 106 years, Mrs Moores is in very good health as her only ailment is arthritis for which she takes medication as and when it flares up. Aside from this and some deafness, the great grandmother is in extremely good shape and still enjoys her favourite meal of pizza and fries as often as she can.

While the young-at-heart gran enjoys her pizza, one thing she’s never taken to is water and never drinks it. Sweets and pizza are definitely up there on her favourites list, as is salt beef and salt pork which she grew up eating.

Since turning 99, Margaret and her family have celebrated each of her birthdays with a big party in her hometown of Rushoon, Newfoundland.

The release of the brand new double-decker pizza from frozen food retailer, Iceland, has been met with criticism from some corners as the 9 inch pizzas contains a belly busting £1,780 calories per pizza, which equates to 90% of a woman’s recommended daily calorie allowance.

The 1,780 calorie pizza is made up of two separate stone baked pizza dough bases sandwiched one on top of the other with toppings of sweet chilli, mozzarella, tomato sauce and pepperoni.

As well as weighing in just shy of the entire daily calorie allowance for women, and a few hundred calorie’s off the recommended daily calorie allowance for men which stands at 2,605, the mighty double-decker pizza also contains a hefty helping of salt, 9.6g to be precise, which is more than one and a half times above the daily amount recommended for men and women.

Described by Iceland as an “innovation”, the frozen food company says the double-decker pizza is intended for sharing, as demonstrated in its TV advert which shows X Factor contestant, Stacey Solomon, tucking into the new pizza with a friend.

Despite Iceland’s argument that the pizza is designed for sharing, at £3 a pizza and just 9 inches in size, many food experts are warning that consumers are likely to mistake the new product as a single serving and could end up consuming a huge portion of their recommended daily calorie allowance in one sitting.

Josh Mather used to run a sports bar with his brother until the economic downturn forced their business to close. Since then, much of their kitchen equipment has been stored at Mather’s garage.

The Mansfield man described how he came face to face with the pizza tray with the amazing image while he was clearing stuff out of his garage last Tuesday, which happened to be Shrove Tuesday and the day before Ash Wednesday. Mather explained how he “totally stopped” what he was doing when he noticed the image burnt into the well-used pizza tray and was completely gobsmacked by the finding.

Inspired by the image of what Mather believes is Jesus and Mary, the former sports bar owner decided to go to church the following day, the first time he’d stepped inside a holy building for 20 years.

This latest sighting isn’t the first time Jesus has shown himself in a pizza tin. Back in 2007 a kitchen worked from Texas claimed the image of Jesus had appeared in a pizza tin he was washing up.

A teenager who dumped an empty pizza box on the steps of Bolton town hall last summer paid a hefty price for his mistake this week after he was fined £75 by a Magistrates Court, and ordered to pay a total of £65 in court costs.

19-year-old Steve Ford pleaded guilty to depositing litter when he appeared before magistrates in Bolton this week.

The case was brought before the court after a law enforcement officer witnessed the teen eating the pizza from a box while sitting on the steps of Bolton town hall. After he’d finished his pizza, the 19-year-old was then seen walking away from the area where he’d sat to eat his pizza, leaving the cardboard pizza box on the steps of the building.

The law enforcement officer then approached the teenager and issued him with an on-the-spot fine of £75. However Mr Ford failed to pay the fixed penalty notice for litter dropping, and so court action was taken against him.

In his defence, Mr Ford said he’d asked his friend to put the pizza box in the bin, but that he’d forgotten to carry out the task.

After entering a guilty plea, Mr Ford was handed a £75 fine, plus he was ordered to pay £50 for prosecution charges and £15 victims surcharge.

The chairwoman of the bench described Mr Ford’s court appearance and subsequent fine as a “hard lesson”.

Macari’s is run by husband and wife team Emeilia and Andrew Macari who say they are 100% behind the campaign to save their local coastguard station from closure.

The Torquay cafe, which is set on the harbour side in the pretty seaside town, will donate £1 from each pizza they sell from 6pm on Friday and Saturday evening to the campaign to save the lifeguard station.

The special life-buoy shaped pizzas have been topped with orange butternut squash, onions and mozzarella to replicate the colour of the orange lifeboat. Plus each customer who buys one of Macari’s pizzas will also receive a special orange and white ribbon to show their support for the cause.

All of the thin crust pizzas served at a Torquay’s Macari’s are homemade using dough which has been hand stretched by Emeilia and baked in an authentic stone oven which was imported from Italy.

If you’re a pizza lover living in the South Devon area, get down to Macari’s now to sample their new life-buoy shaped pizza created especially for the campaign to save local Brixham Coastguard Station.

Marks and Spencer have come under fire this week after a customer who bought a frozen pizza from a store in Essex discovered a cockroach concealed amongst the cheese.

Friends Jemma Cohen and Christyanna Mendel met up for a bite to eat and shared the roasted vegetable and pesto pizza which they bought from a local branch of Marks and Spencer in Loughton.

Initially the pair mistook the cockroach for a burnt bit of cheese, discarding it on the side of the plate. It wasn’t until later when they were about to wash up the used plates, that they noticed that what they first took to be burnt cheese, was in fact a cockroach, and it was missing a leg.

After realising they’d eaten a pizza with a dead insect concealed on it, the two women were horrified and began to feel unwell, with Jemma describing how she was physically sick later that same night.

The next day, the women complained to the store where they’d bought the pizza and also to M&S head office. They were told to fill out a complaints form and to return the remains of the pizza along with the box it came in so that the company could launch a full investigation into how the cockroach came to be included in the pizza.

Marks and Spencer say they are treating the incident as a “very serious complaint”. An M&S spokesperson said that neither of the women had been in touch, and urged them to do so in order to allow the company to carry out their investigation.

DOMINO’S LAUNCHES OFFICIAL BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT PIZZA

T o celebrate the third year of its Britain’s Got Talent sponsorship,
<a href="http://www.dominos.co.uk/ourstores/Pontyclun.aspx"title="" >pizza delivery expert, <a href="http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/category/dominos-pizza-news/"title="" >Domino’s Pizza, has launched a new pizza
created especially for this year’s series of the top ITV show.

Mexican Sizzler

The official Britain’s Got Talent pizza – the Mexican Sizzler – was
designed by 21 year old Emma Johnston from Glasgow as part of a
national competition Domino’s ran last year. Domino’s received 38,000
entries from budding pizza designers and the top three toppings were
put to the public vote.

Almost 30,000 votes were cast and Emma was crowned the winner for her
spicy combination of chicken fajita slices, crunchy tortillas, green
peppers, red peppers and jalapenos on Domino’s classic fresh dough
base with vine-ripened tomato sauce and 100% mozzarella. Emma scooped
£10,000 for her top topping and the Mexican Sizzler goes on sale today
[April 19, 2010], as the official pizza for this year’s Britain’s Got
Talent.

Robin Auld, sales and marketing director of Domino’s Pizza, said: “We
were staggered by the country’s talent for designing pizza in our
competition. Emma’s Mexican Sizzler really caught the eye (and
stomach!) of the nation and we’re delighted to launch it on our menu
in time for the new series. What better way to watch than with an
official Britain’s Got Talent pizza?”

The Mexican Sizzler – the official Britain’s Got Talent pizza – is on
sale in Domino’s stores across the country, for a limited period. To
grab a slice of the action, call Domino’s national hotline 087
12121212, order online at www.dominos.co.uk or visit your local store.
