The 25 year old was found stabbed to death in his car on his last ever shift at Dominos Pizza.

His final shift should have been a day that marked new beginnings for the graduate, not the ending of his life.

He was off to start a new job in I.T, an area he was so eager to move into. South Yorkshire police say a 17-year-old man was arrested on Thursday evening to be questioned in connection with this case.

A 25-year-old has also been detained in connection.

His colleagues said that Mr Peiris felt unwell during his shift but had agreed to work through this final order. He had come to the UK from Sri Lanka to complete his I. T. degree, graduating at Sheffield Hallam University in 2011.

His family is terribly upset with this awful occurrence.

“We sent our son to the UK to study so he can have a better life.

“Now we are left with only a broken heart.

“We were devastated and shocked to hear of our son’s tragic end and we are still unable to comprehend that he is actually gone.

“Thavisha was one of the most caring and loving sons a parent could have.

“He was full of life and always had a smile on his face. Anyone who met him immediately liked him.

“He was a deeply religious boy who would not even harm an ant.”

His family will be flown to the UK with Dominoes Pizza covering the costs of the flights.

A strong police team is working on the murder inquiry, with officers carrying out extensive inquiries and examining CCTV footage throughout the surrounding areas. We hope that the police can provide the family with both the answers and closure that they need.

Gluten Free all the way http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/gluten-free-all-the-way-161100/ http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/gluten-free-all-the-way-161100/#comments Wed, 02 Oct 2013 15:06:20 +0000 http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/?p=1611 They are all catching on, like Dominoes

Crossed_Grain_JPEG

Since big brand names Dominoes and Pizza Express have gained accreditation from Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease, everybody wants a slice. The Gluten Free word spreaders posses an agenda to teach dining establishments throughout the UK to follow in the footsteps of such large pizza pioneers. Coeliac UK provide in house training and celebrate in the food chains that posses a care for those with dietary requirements and special meal needs.

Harrods Department Store is amongst the newly accredited establishments. Their Georgian Restaurant now offers a gluten free afternoon tea. Following in-house training by Coeliac UK, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon also makes an extensive range of gluten-free dishes including sandwiches, hot food and soups.

Gluten Free foods are taking the world by storm and can be located throughout the food market and dining establishments. This influx of awareness has arguably been a knock on effect, with a diverse and stretched range of spots now offering coeliac friendly option or entire menu.

Cutting gluten out of the diet has become a popular trend with many partaking on this eating path voluntarily.  Many can see the health benefits illustrated by pushing gluten foods aside.

Pizza News spoke with Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Coeliac UK, she said: “We are delighted that many catering establishments, including a number of pizza restaurants, have gained full gluten-free (GF) accreditation from Coeliac UK. Our services are opening the door to the gluten-free consumer and, at the same time, addressing the issue of finding safe food outside of the home – the top concern of people with coeliac disease – which will enable those with the condition to be included better in hospitality. Pizza had been missed by many who have to follow a gluten-free diet and the moves by a number of high street chain to take out our accreditation has put the dish back on the menu for many.”

This is great news for us as pizza is available to the masses; no matter what requirements they hay employ.

Representatives from Domino’s Pizza Europe, Middle East and Asia (EMEA), staff from the UK head office, including the CEO, Lance Batchelor, and the franchisee and store team will be celebrating in style with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11am.  The store will be decorated to promote the special occasion and Councillor Brian Ayling (the Mayor’s representative) will be joining the Domino’s team at 1pm to cut a celebratory cake.

Domino’s will be running lots of promotions in line with the event, including a double happy hour from Midday until 2pm, where customers can purchase a two topping personal pizza for just £1. Also, there will be two opportunities to ‘win pizza for a year’.  As well as this, the first 50 customers to arrive at the store, between the hours of 10am and Midday, will receive a FREE personal pizza.

Domino’s Pizza’s corporate charity, Rays of Sunshine, will also be involved in the day’s events and will be bringing along some of the ‘wish’ children and their families so they can learn how to make pizza.  The store is also offering this as a prize, whereby one family will be invited to the store for a pizza making experience.

Eric Anderson, Domino’s Vice President for EMEA, said:  “We have been delivering, hot, fresh pizza to customers since 1960 when the first Domino’s store opened in the USA.  Since then the business has grown very successfully, now operating in more than 80 global markets.  To reach our 2000th European store is a real achievement and we are very excited about coming to the UK to celebrate the day in style.  We want to make it a special and memorable occasion for staff and customers alike.”

Franchisee for the Hemel Hempstead store, Arshad Yasin, said: “I am delighted that my store has been chosen as the 2000th European store, it is a great honour.  My staff are very excited that so many people from Domino’s corporate team will be coming to see them and we are looking forward to making the day an eventful one.  We want our customers to come and join in the fun and help us celebrate.”

The day will be full of fun, with stilt walkers, the company mascot and of course lots of hot, fresh pizza.

Pizza Hut removed salad bars in China because of greedy customers ‘salad stacking’ http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/pizza-hut-removed-salad-bars-in-china-because-of-greedy-customers-salad-stacking-159900/ http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/pizza-hut-removed-salad-bars-in-china-because-of-greedy-customers-salad-stacking-159900/#comments Tue, 30 Jul 2013 10:38:08 +0000 http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/?p=1599 salad stack1Pizza restaurant chain Pizza Hut banned its salad bars from its branches in China several years ago as part of, what they called it at the time, a menu revamp.

But many people believe the real reason for the end of the salad bar was due to crafty Chinese customers getting around the ‘one trip rule’ of only being allowed one helping from the salad bar by creatively stacking massive towers of salad in order to get the most out of their one trip.

In UK and US Pizza Hut restaurants, customers are allowed the generous offering of unlimited, ‘help yourself’ salad bars, but in China, customers were limited to just one plate-full. Because they wanted to make sure they were getting their money’s-worth, Chinese customers developed the technique of ‘salad-stacking’, which involved building complicated and intricate structures out of salad which would maximise the amount they could get on the plate. It is this practice which many think is the reason why the Far East stores decided to end the option of salad bars.

The announcement that the salad bars would soon be coming to an end only encouraged customers to salad stack more, before they lost the chance completely.

Not all China’s Pizza Hut salad bars have been removed – some still remain in Beijing branches, but it’s believed that salad stacking is no longer as fashionable as it used to be.

Domino’s launching NFC-enabled summer ad campaign to encourage app orders http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/dominos-launchingnfc-enabled-summer-ad-campaign-to-encourage-app-orders-158300/ http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/dominos-launchingnfc-enabled-summer-ad-campaign-to-encourage-app-orders-158300/#comments Tue, 02 Jul 2013 14:23:20 +0000 http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/?p=1583 dominos app handSummer is the quietest time of the year in terms of orders for Domino’s, and to increase sales, the pizza chain is using NFC (near field communication) in the form of scannable outdoor adverts.

Customers might not find themselves near a physical Domino’s store while they are out and about this summer, so the interactive ads, which can be scanned using a smart phone, enable them to download the Domino’s app. This gives customers an easier, more straightforward way to get the app and order pizza, rather than having to search for it through an app store. It’s all part of a campaign to drive summer sales for the popular pizza chain, and was created in partnership with Iris Worldwide and Arena Media.

According to Domino’s, less people order in the store because they are more likely to be out doing other things such as socialising with friends and family. Also, the fact there are few major sporting events happening this year compounds the situation – this has been a factor, credited by Domino’s, to slow sales periods in the past.

The NFC-enabled ads are part of a move to drive loyalty to the brand, rather than using mobile just to push sales at customers. It gives customers a chance to show loyalty in their own time and off their own backs.

Suellen Morris, Campaign Manager at Domino’s, says: “Lot’s of people already use our app and over 50 per cent of orders are now online. We wanted to make it more convenient for people to order when they’re out and about this summer.”

Traditionally, brands have used near field communication (NFC) for the purpose of mobile payments. But now, some have begun to offer smartphone users rewards for tagging promotions in order to take it beyond just payments. For example, HMV offers customers incentives for checking in at its stores through NFC tags in the form of cards, wristbands or mobile app.

Last week, the four top groups of students were invited to the Domino’s store at Manor Walks Shopping and Leisure in Cramlington to put their pizza ideas and theories into practice.

Students Shauna McLeod, Steph Pattern, Cerys Ainsley and Beth Wilkinson were among the pupils who took part in the scheme and got a ‘pizza the action’.

The students were given a lesson in operation and procedures at the Domino’s branch, before they were given free reign to create their own pizzas.

Bruno Coppola, Manor Walks’ centre manager, said: “We always strive to give something back to Cramlington locals.

“I’d like to thank all of the entrants who were involved and congratulate the overall winners of the project challenge as the choice was difficult as well as the team at Dominos for dedicating their time to such a worthwhile project.”

Michael Bacon, a teacher of Business Studies at the school, said: “We always try and make the experience for our students as real as possible.”

“The Year 9 students have relished the opportunity to try and win the competition and thoroughly enjoyed their first-hand experience in the restaurant.”

“On behalf of the staff and students, I would personally like to thank Domino’s at Manor Walks for their support and partnership for this part of the project.”

Domino’s sponsoring ITV’s Off Their Rockers http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/dominos-sponsoring-itvs-off-their-rockers-155400/ http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/dominos-sponsoring-itvs-off-their-rockers-155400/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 09:12:39 +0000 http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/?p=1554 off their rockersA brand new prime-time comedy show started last night on ITV1, and it’s being sponsored by Domino’s. The outrageous hidden-camera entertainment programme, called Off Their Rockers, features fearless old aged pensioners and senior citizens carrying out brazenly funny pranks, stunts and sketches to dupe and surprise the unsuspecting general public. The Rockers, as they’re known, hit the streets of Britain to confuse, tease and flabbergast passers-by in hilarious, saucy and totally extraordinary set-ups. Stunts have so far included a nun wreaking havoc on a mobility scooter and an enquiry about a vajazzle. The Domino’s sponsorship started from yesterday.

Simon Wallis, sales and marketing director at Domino’s said: “It’s such a fun show and is a great fit for our brand – pizza and laughs – the perfect Sunday evening before the working week begins again. We’ve developed a good working relationship with ITV, which has an impressive track record for prime time family entertainment.”

The last ITV show Domino’s sponsored was the hit celebrity show Splash in January, where several famous faces were taught to dive by Olympic diving champion Tom Daly. Each week a different set of celebrities had to show off their newly learnt skills in a live show, and would go through to the next round based on viewers’ votes and judges’ scores. The leading Pizza company has a track record of supporting peak-time family shows – it has also previously sponsored Red Or Black? and Britain’s Got Talent.

The sponsorship package for Off Their Rockers was negotiated by ITV Commercial and Arena Media on behalf of Domino’s Pizza, with the sponsorship idents created by Iris-Worldwide.

Domino’s Pizza is the UK’s leading player in the pizza delivery industry, and opened its first store in Luton in 1985. It now has 810 stores across the UK, Ireland, Germany and Switzerland.

Catch Off Their Rockers every Sunday night on ITV 1 at 7:30pm.
