Could Chemicals Used to Make Pizza Boxes be Turning Women into Men? Tue, 12 Jan 2016 11:27:49 +0000 Yes you heard correctly, some are suggesting that the materials used in many pizza boxes up and down the country could encourage male sexual development…in women! Doctors are warning that the grease-resistant compounds found in cardboard can mutate sexual organs in snails becoming progressively worried that it could do the same to humans.

Scottish marine biology expert Dr Mark Hartl, of Heriot-Watt University, said a study had shown similar chemicals called perfluoroalkyls “inhibited an enzyme important in female sexual development”.

He told that “a build-up of testosterone in female snails, leading to mascualinised females who grew penises”.

Although it would take a lot to put us off our pizza here at the Pizza News HQ, we may have to draw the line and gender change. However, to what extent can we believe such ‘out-there’ theories ?

Chemistry researcher Jamie McIntyre, 25 and from Glasgow, said: “The key would be how they tested leaching of the compounds from pizza boxes into the pizzas.

“The question is how much actually transfers from the box to the pizza to the consumer. The larger the compounds are, the longer they tend to stay inside the body if they are consumed.”

A spokesman added suppliers of paper board need to demonstrate it was safe, adding: “Any pizza boxes used in Scotland must comply.”

With Christmas and New Year having taken its toll on us we can’t help but wish that we had the perfect hangover cure throughout the party-fuels month of December, with all the bucks fizz and Baileys being a constant fixture o the dinner table.

My making ordering pizza such an easy task the Pizza chain could monitor the number of sales across the country.

Milton Keynes Dominos Driver Spits in Customer’s Food Tue, 22 Dec 2015 15:24:03 +0000

When ordering a pizza from an established chain such as Dominos you expect a certain standard in regards to both food and customer service. However, for 23-year-old Stacey Baxter got more than she bargained for, left ‘utterly disgusted’ by the actions of her local Dominos delivery driver.

Having been given out-of-date dips and food that was discoloured and cold Stacey understandably complained, being promised a fresh order straight away. Expecting to be contacted by an apologetic driver her experience was far from positive, given nothing but abuse and bad customer service.

“When the replacement delivery arrived, we refused to return the dips because we had paid for them and wanted to take the issue up with their HR.

“The store manager then phoned again and started shouting at us saying we had stolen the food and that we had to return the fresh order immediately to the driver.

“When I refused, he said: ‘Okay whatever, enjoy your food because I spat in it’, then hung up.”

“I was in shock and couldn’t believe what we had just heard.”Stacey-Baxter (2)

Although taking images to record her experience with the pizza chain a Dominos official did offer some words of remorse.

Speaking on behalf of Domino’s Pizza Group, Helen Tosney-Collins said: “We would like to thank Ms Baxter for raising her concerns and giving us the opportunity to address them.

“We take food safety extremely seriously and have raised this matter urgently with the store. Unfortunately, there was a mix-up with the dips with a new team member who has now been re-trained on date management.

“The Store Manager has apologised for any miscommunication and assured us that under no circumstances was any threat made to Ms Baxter’s food.

“Customer satisfaction will always be highest priority to us and the team will be contacting Ms Baxter directly by way of apology.”

Dominos Enter German Market With £58m Pizza Chain Deal Wed, 16 Dec 2015 09:54:51 +0000 As the pizza kings of Britain Dominos are always keen to enter new markets, taking their industry knowledge and repackaging it overseas. This week they have released the news of their new acquisition, joining forces with Australian Dominos owners in a venture that will reinvent the business.

Joey’s Pizza

Joey’s Pizza is brand that boasts 212 stores across Germany with annual sales of €143m (£103.9m). With such healthy sales figures it is understandable why Dominos would want to get involved, illustrating how a recognised brand can duplicate their niche globally.

Why Germany?

Germany is surprisingly the fourth largest pizza market with this deal worth staggering £58m.

Don Meij, chief executive of Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, said that entering the German market represented a long-term growth opportunity.

“The acquisition of the market-leading Joey’s Pizza business provides immediate scale and marketing presence which we can build from,” he said.

When will this changeover take place?

Like any business handovers things take time, with dominos claiming to be the owners of Joey’s in the first quarter of 2016. Subject to regulatory checks we at Pizza News eagerly await what next year has to bring the pizza industry.

Pizza Hut Get a Slice of National Curry Week Action With Naan Pizza Deal Wed, 14 Oct 2015 10:59:14 +0000 As it is National Curry Week, a seven-day celebration of world foods, we at Pizza News thought we would see what was going online the food industry, discovering that Pizza Hut had gone to great lengths to entice curry-loving customers.

Launching a special National Curry Week menu the Pizza chain are expecting big orders for these new products, with Head Office feeling rather optimistic.

Kath Austin, Director of HR and Marketing at Pizza Hut Restaurants, said: “We wanted to create something innovative to celebrate National Curry Week and the reopening of our flagship new look Hut in the heart of Birmingham, and these dishes are the perfect fit.

“It took our team over 15 hours to get the flavour combinations just right. Naan pizzas are a first for us so we’re very proud of them and can’t wait to hear what people think.”

Tej Randeva, Director at Maharaja, an Indian food catering company shed some light on Piza Hut’s motives:

‘Having been involved in the pizza-chain and curry industry I can completely understand why Pizza Hut have decided to launch such a product. With curry being the UK’s favourite dish, followed by pizza, National Curry Week is a way to get amongst another market, those that may not think of pizza as a first takeaway choice’.
