Could Chemicals Used to Make Pizza Boxes be Turning Women into Men?

Yes you heard correctly, some are suggesting that the materials used in many pizza boxes up and down the country could encourage male sexual development…in women! Doctors are warning that the grease-resistant compounds found in cardboard can mutate sexual organs in snails becoming progressively worried that it could do the same to humans.

Scottish marine biology expert Dr Mark Hartl, of Heriot-Watt University, said a study had shown similar chemicals called perfluoroalkyls “inhibited an enzyme important in female sexual development”.

He told that “a build-up of testosterone in female snails, leading to mascualinised females who grew penises”.

Although it would take a lot to put us off our pizza here at the Pizza News HQ, we may have to draw the line and gender change. However, to what extent can we believe such ‘out-there’ theories ?

Chemistry researcher Jamie McIntyre, 25 and from Glasgow, said: “The key would be how they tested leaching of the compounds from pizza boxes into the pizzas.

“The question is how much actually transfers from the box to the pizza to the consumer. The larger the compounds are, the longer they tend to stay inside the body if they are consumed.”

A spokesman added suppliers of paper board need to demonstrate it was safe, adding: “Any pizza boxes used in Scotland must comply.”
