The American president was in Las Vegas for an official visit, making a speech at the UPS in Vegas during his trip to Nevada.

A dozen pizzas and approximately the same number of pasta dishes were ordered from the Dom DeMarco’s Pizzeria and Bar which only opened its Las Vegas eatery last month. The pizza takeaway and restaurant is a spinoff from the famous DeMarco’s Di Fara Pizza which is something of an institution in the New York district of Brooklyn where it’s been serving up pizzas for over 45 years.

The large order of takeaway pizzas and pastas were delivered to the first floor of the Westin’s Element Hotel in Summerlin where Obama’s staff were staying, while two of the pizzas were sent up to the presidential suite where the president was staying.

According to Jeff LaPour, co-owner of DeMarco’s Pizzeria who served Obama’s pizzas during his Vegas visit, the president’s personal chef gave the pizzas his approval as he was reported to have given the takeaway food the thumbs up when sharing a few slices of pizzas with a fellow White House staff member.

So if you happen to find yourself in Las Vegas any time soon, be sure to treat yourself to a pizza takeaway approved by the president himself.

Shen Hongui came up with the plan after Pizza Hut imposed a limit on the number of visits diners could make to their salad bar in their restaurants in China. Following Shen’s instructions, diners are able to construct a 1 metre high tower of free salad, ensuring they make the most out of their single visit to the salad buffet.

The engineer recommends building a sturdy foundation for your salad tower with the use of potatoes or chickpeas, then using carrot batons as scaffolding to construct the tower shape and an outer wall of cucumber. The tower will then be hollow to allow the diner to fill it up with their own choices.

A British newspaper has reported that Pizza Hut restaurants in China started pulling their salad bars after the Shen tower of salad started to gain popularity amongst diners who were attempting to pile their bowls with a metre of salad at a time.

There were concerns that the 1 metre salad towers would lead to food wastage as most diners would fail to finish their mountains of free salad, leaving much of the salad to be left uneaten.

With Brits eager to save money ahead of the costly festive season, Domino’s cashed in on customer’s preference to stay in and eat rather than dine out.

Figures released by the leading home <a href="http://www.dominos.co.uk/ourstores/Pontyclun.aspx"title="" >pizza delivery company showed that in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the last 13 weeks leading up to Christmas, Domino’s stores in the UK that have been open for more than 12 months showed a 3.6% increase in like-for-like sales compared to the previous year.

As well as reporting a healthy boost in sales to end the year, Domino’s Pizza also succeeded in expanding its empire further in the UK with the launch of 62 new stores throughout the country and plan to open a similar number in the coming year. This brings the UK’s number of Domino’s Pizza stores to 726 stores in Britain.

Overall comparable sales for the year were up by 3% with Domino’s benefitting further from the economic downturn and the eating habits of the nation as more and more people opt to order a takeaway than dine out at a restaurant. Value for money deals at Domino’s such as the Two for Tuesday offer and Buy One Get One Free deals have also helped the pizza grow revenue.

A baby girl was found in the car park of North Texas pizza takeaway on Sunday night by police. However it transpired that the 6-month old baby had not been abandoned, but simply left by accident by her absent minded father.

An officer from the Northlade Police Department reportedly found the infant sitting strapped into a car seat, which was placed on the side of the car park, on Sunday evening. The authorities started trawling CCTV images of the car park outside the Domino’s Pizza takeaway in Roanake to try and determine how the baby came to be left there alone, however the mystery was quickly solved when a phone call was received by the nearby pizza store from the frantic mother of the child.

Explaining how the infant had come to be left alone in the car park, the father described how he had dropped his wife off to do some shopping, before heading to the Domino’s Pizza takeaway to collect an order. With four children to keep track of, the father accidentally forgot to load the fourth child into the car, leaving her in her seat on the side of the parking space.

When the family arrived home, they realised they were one child down, and quickly called the Domino’s Pizza store where they’d just collected their takeaway to alert staff to the fact they thought they’d left their child there.

Both parents were questioned by police who were satisfied the incident was a genuine mistake. The 6-month old baby girl has now been safely returned to her family and no further charges are being pursued by the police.

US congress are in the process of considering proposals put forward by the Agricultural Department on food classification for school children, including the classification of a pizza as a vegetable due to the tomato paste used on the base.

Congress are currently reviewing the recommendations being outlined as part of a new healthy eating incentive for school children before voting on what will become legislation. Part of this process will see senators vote on how to classify specific food products for use in school dinners with foods being categorised to help schools across the States offer balanced meals for pupils.

However the suggestion that a pizza could be classed as vegetable due to the tomato paste topping has raised eyebrows, especially in light of the Obama administration’s proposals to make school dinners healthier to help battle the increasing obesity rates amongst America’s young people.

Currently, a pizza with 2 tablespoons of tomato paste is counted as a vegetable, however this could be increased to half a cup to equal a vegetable serving according to the new proposals. The Agricultural Department are pushing for tomato puree to be treated in the same way as other fruit pastes and purees.

The Agricultural Department has been crafting the proposals for the last year. The main aim of the bill is offer more nutritional lunch options for school children, although congress and the food industry have reportedly pushed back on the details in order to keep costs down as the price of fresh vegetables could prove too costly for school budgets.

Congress is expected to vote on the proposals later this week.

There was success for a Domino’s Pizza outlet in Stoke-on-Trent this week after the local council granted permission for the branch to stay open until 3am every day. The franchisee at the Hanley branch of Domino’s believes there is a strong demand for late night pizzas and hopes to tap into this growing market now the takeaway has been granted permission to deliver pizzas until 3am.

According to the franchisee running the Domino’s store in Hanley, the phone records show that the pizza takeaway receives a high volume of calls between the hours of 11.30pm-2am which until now, they were unable to respond to. Although the branch of Domino’s has been granted permission to serve pizza until 3am, there is a condition upon the licence which states that pizzas can only be delivered until this time, with the shop closing its doors to collections from 11.30pm.

In addition to the delivery-only policy between 11:30pm and 3am, the Hanley Domino’s branch must also adhere to litter collection patrols, as per the terms of the licence. Twice daily, at the start and end of the day, Domino’s staff will collect litter around the takeaway, to ensure the extra opening hours don’t have a negative effect on the local area.

The pizza provider’s application for increased opening hours did prove controversial with some residents with 33 names objecting to the plans. However the Domino’s franchise sought to alleviate the locals’ worries, issuing all local residents with a letter outlining the plans for the branch and its proposal for late opening hours.

After the letter was received, Domino’s succeeded in winning around a number of those objectors, with 16 out of the original 33 signing a petition in support of the proposals. In total 37 people signed the Domino’s letter in favour of the 3am opening.

The third in line to the throne was amongst a group of 30 other British men who are all undergoing military training in Arizona. According to a newspaper report, a representative called ahead to the restaurant to make the booking for the 30 diners, with the party arriving at 7:30pm and staying for over an hour.

A visit from a member of the British Royal Family was branded a “big deal” by the owner of the Italian restaurant, Nino Buccellato, who runs Little Italy in Gila Bend in Arizona. The restaurant owner said the 27-year-old ordered the Meat Lover’s pizza from their menu which is served topped with sausage, bacon ham and pepperoni, with the prince finishing up the whole pizza without leaving a scrap on his plate.

The visit from Prince Harry has caused quite a stir in the small town which has a population of fewer than 2,000 people, although the other diners in the Little Italy restaurant were said to have noticed their royal fellow diner, but didn’t interrupt or bother him during his meal leaving him to enjoy his pizza in peace.

Margaret Ellen Moores turned 106 on November 5th and celebrated with a party surrounded by her family and friends. When asked about her tips for a long life, the centurion’s daughter, 65-year-old Marie Cheeseman, revealed that her mother has always had a sweet tooth and loves nothing better than tucking into pizza and fries.

For a woman who’s lived for 106 years, Mrs Moores is in very good health as her only ailment is arthritis for which she takes medication as and when it flares up. Aside from this and some deafness, the great grandmother is in extremely good shape and still enjoys her favourite meal of pizza and fries as often as she can.

While the young-at-heart gran enjoys her pizza, one thing she’s never taken to is water and never drinks it. Sweets and pizza are definitely up there on her favourites list, as is salt beef and salt pork which she grew up eating.

Since turning 99, Margaret and her family have celebrated each of her birthdays with a big party in her hometown of Rushoon, Newfoundland.

The release of the brand new double-decker pizza from frozen food retailer, Iceland, has been met with criticism from some corners as the 9 inch pizzas contains a belly busting £1,780 calories per pizza, which equates to 90% of a woman’s recommended daily calorie allowance.

The 1,780 calorie pizza is made up of two separate stone baked pizza dough bases sandwiched one on top of the other with toppings of sweet chilli, mozzarella, tomato sauce and pepperoni.

As well as weighing in just shy of the entire daily calorie allowance for women, and a few hundred calorie’s off the recommended daily calorie allowance for men which stands at 2,605, the mighty double-decker pizza also contains a hefty helping of salt, 9.6g to be precise, which is more than one and a half times above the daily amount recommended for men and women.

Described by Iceland as an “innovation”, the frozen food company says the double-decker pizza is intended for sharing, as demonstrated in its TV advert which shows X Factor contestant, Stacey Solomon, tucking into the new pizza with a friend.

Despite Iceland’s argument that the pizza is designed for sharing, at £3 a pizza and just 9 inches in size, many food experts are warning that consumers are likely to mistake the new product as a single serving and could end up consuming a huge portion of their recommended daily calorie allowance in one sitting.

<a href="http://www.pizzanews.co.uk/category/pizza-express-news/"title="" >Pizza Express has submitted plans to the West Oxfordshire District Council to expand an existing unit at the Marriotts Walk Shopping Centre in Witney in order to make the space viable for a restaurant opening.

However the plans have been a cause for concern for some people in Witney who fear the expansion could affect the design of the shopping centre as Pizza Express are proposing to almost double the unit space.

In order to accommodate the proposed Pizza Express restaurant, the unit would need to be extended out in to the square, forcing The Buttercross Needle sculpture to be moved, which some would argue, would affect the overall design and look of the centre.

The Marriotts Walk Shopping Centre only opened in Witney 2 years ago at a cost of £50 million. Since the new centre was opened, Starbucks have owned the lease on the site which is being proposed for the Pizza Express restaurant, although they have never opened a branch from the unit and it has remained empty the entire time.

The introduction of the new Pizza Express restaurant to the Witney shopping centre is being hailed as a positive move by many, including the town’s mayor, who believes it will offer something for young people and families, which is currently lacking in the area.

The council is in the process of considering the plans which would expand the unit in Witney from 1,580 sq feet to 2,850 sq feet.
